When we look at chimpanzees, we see a lot of ourselves reflected back. Undeniably intelligent, chimpanzees live complex lives full of emotion, form lifelong friendships, and show empathy towards one another. Because of how similar we are to chimps, they have unknowingly become surrogates for humans in a wide range of biomedical research for nearly a century. Our relatedness has made many question how ethical our treatment of chimpanzees is and there is a large push by animal rights organizations to stop all research using chimpanzees as models for humans. In this site, I will provide a brief overview of research, legislation regulating chimps in research, examine the lives of captive chimpanzees, and provide my suggestions for animal rights groups and legislators on where the future of chimpanzee research should be headed.
